--Interview Andjela Milovanovic - Ferhat Demir

At just 19 years old, Andjela Milovanović represents the new generation of elite defenders coming out of Serbian football. Standing at 180 cm, combining physical dominance with speed and tactical intelligence, she is already proving that modern football demands much more than just defensive stability. It requires leadership, composure, and vision.

After winning multiple trophies with Red Star Belgrade and gaining valuable international experience with Serbia’s youth national team, Andjela has taken the next big step in her career by joining GKS Katowice, one of the most ambitious clubs in Polish women’s football.

Who is Andjela Milovanović? How did your football journey begin, and what led you to the central defender position?

My football journey started very naturally because I’ve always loved the game. Like many kids, I began playing in front of my building and at school with friends. One day, a coach from a nearby boys’ football club noticed me and invited me to join their team.

I started training with boys at the age of eight, which helped me develop both physically and mentally at a very early stage. Later, I joined Red Star Belgrade, where I continued to grow and understand the game at a higher level.

During my early years, I played in several positions, but over time it became clear that the center-back role suited me best. I felt comfortable taking responsibility, organizing the defense, and reading the game, and from that moment, I fully embraced that position.

How would you describe yourself off the pitch in three words?

I would describe myself as positive, hardworking, and responsible. I always try to approach everything I do with a good attitude, whether it’s football or life outside the pitch. I believe consistency, discipline, and responsibility are key values not only for success in sport but also for personal growth.

What does playing as a central defender mean to you? What separates a good defender from a world-class one?

For me, being a central defender means being the foundation of the team. It’s about responsibility, communication, and leadership. You have to stay focused at all times and guide the defensive line.

The difference between a good and a world-class defender is consistency and decision-making. At the highest level, every detail matters. A top defender reads the game early, stays calm under pressure, and gives confidence to the entire team.

You are often described as a modern defender. How would you define your playing style?

I would describe my playing style as strong, fast, and disciplined. My height, speed, and long stride allow me to cover a lot of space, while my physical presence helps me in duels. At the same time, I focus a lot on reading the game and reacting quickly to dangerous situations.

I always try to stay composed and make smart decisions, because modern football requires defenders to think just as much as they act.

You achieved great success with Red Star, winning multiple titles. How important were those moments for your development?

Those titles were extremely important for my development. Winning trophies taught me what it means to compete at a high level and how important teamwork and discipline are. Being part of a successful team helped me build confidence and develop a winning mentality. Those experiences shaped me not only as a player but also as a person.

You played for Serbia U19 and reached the Final 8 of the UEFA Championship. What did that experience teach you?

That experience showed me the true level of international football. The game is faster, more physical, and every mistake can be decisive. Playing against top teams and even older players helped me grow mentally and tactically. It gave me confidence and made me realize how much more I can achieve with hard work and focus.

You recently joined GKS Katowice. How has your experience in Poland been so far?

My experience in Poland has been very positive from the first day. I felt welcomed immediately, and the club is extremely well organized. What impressed me the most is the professionalism. Everything is structured to help players improve and perform at their best. It’s an environment where you are constantly pushed to grow, and I’m very happy to be part of it.

What have you learned from moving abroad at such a young age?

Moving abroad has helped me become more independent, responsible, and mentally stronger. Living in a different country, adapting to a new culture and language, teaches you a lot about yourself. It also shows you how important it is to stay focused, disciplined, and open to learning every day.

Is playing for the Serbia senior national team one of your main goals?

Yes, definitely. Representing the senior national team is one of my biggest ambitions. I am working every day to reach that level and prove that I am ready. It would be a huge honor to represent my country at the highest level.

How do you see the development of women’s football in Serbia?

Women’s football in Serbia is growing, but there is still a lot of room for improvement. More investment, better infrastructure, and stronger media coverage can significantly help the development of the game. I believe that with the right support, Serbian women’s football can reach a much higher level in the future.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I believe I am still at the beginning of my journey, but in five years I hope to be playing at a very high level in European football. I want to be recognized as a disciplined, strong, and reliable defender, but also as someone who brings positive energy and professionalism to every team.

Which defenders inspire you the most?

I don’t have a single favorite player, but I admire defenders who are strong in duels, calm under pressure, and consistent in their performances. I try to learn from players who combine physical strength with intelligence and positioning, because I believe that balance is what defines top-level defenders.

What are your biggest goals in football?

My goal is to continuously improve and reach the highest possible level. I want to compete in strong leagues, gain experience, and contribute to my team’s success. Representing my country at the senior level is also a dream that motivates me every day.

What message would you send to young girls who want to become professional footballers?

Believe in yourself, stay patient, and work hard every single day. There will always be challenges, but if you truly love football, you have to keep going. With discipline and dedication, everything is possible.

What is your view on the Women Footballers Association in Turkey and initiatives like Kristal Ayaklar?

I believe that initiatives like the Women Footballers Association and events such as the Kristal Ayaklar ceremony are very important for the development and promotion of women’s football. They bring visibility, recognition, and motivation, not only for players but also for young girls who dream of becoming footballers. I truly hope these events continue to grow, reach a wider audience, and gain even more popularity, because they represent a positive step forward for women’s football.

Finally, who is Andjela Milovanović outside of football?

Outside of football, I am a positive, friendly, and open person. I enjoy spending time with people, learning new things, and working on myself. The values that guide me are discipline, respect, responsibility, and honesty. I believe that being a good person is just as important as being a good player, and I always try to represent my club and country in the best possible way.
