--Interview Špela Gerbec - Ferhat Demir

You have just signed for Crvena Zvezda, widely regarded as the biggest club in the Balkans. What does this transfer mean to you at this stage of your career?

Signing for Crvena Zvezda means something completely new and very important for me at this stage of my career. It is a big step forward, as I am joining a club with a rich tradition, a high level of professionalism, and big ambitions. Moving to Belgrade and playing for such a prestigious club brings new challenges, valuable experiences, and a great opportunity for both personal and football development. I am really excited about the new environment, a different style of football, and the chance to improve every single day.

Red Star has won the domestic double in each of the last two seasons. How motivating is it to join a club with such a strong winning culture and clear ambitions?

It is extremely motivating to join a club with such a strong winning mentality and clear ambitions. The success of the last two seasons shows that Red Star operates at a very high level and always aims for the top. For me, this is a huge motivation because I want to be part of an environment where the highest standards are expected from every player. A culture like this pushes you to improve daily, take responsibility, and constantly strive for new trophies.

For readers who are getting to know you better: who is Špela Gerbec, both as a footballer and as a person off the pitch?

Špela Gerbec is a young footballer who is fully focused on development and continuous improvement. On the pitch, I am determined, aggressive, and competitive, always giving my maximum and never giving up easily. I like to take responsibility and look for ways to help the team.
Off the pitch, I enjoy challenges, new environments, and learning new things. I am disciplined, goal-oriented, and highly motivated, while also valuing teamwork and the people around me. Football has taught me persistence, adaptability, and self-belief, qualities I try to apply in my everyday life as well.

You are considered the standout player of the Slovenian U19 national team and were also the top scorer in the last qualification cycle. What does taking responsibility at international level mean to you?

Taking responsibility at international level is a great honor, but also a serious responsibility. I am aware that results and individual achievements are never the work of one player alone, but of the entire team. When I play for the national team, I always feel a special obligation to give my maximum, support my teammates, and contribute, especially in difficult moments. These experiences help me grow in maturity and confidence and teach me the importance of leading by example, not just with words.

So far in the 2025/26 season, you have already scored seven goals in the championship. How do you evaluate your current form and development?

The start of the season was not the easiest for me, as I was dealing with an injury that made it harder to find rhythm and prepare fully. Despite that, I always tried to give my maximum in every training session. Once I got the chance to play matches, I focused on my game, stayed relaxed, and tried to enjoy football. I believe that shows on the pitch. I am satisfied with my current form, but I also know there is always room for improvement and further development.

If you had to describe yourself on the pitch using just one word, which word would you choose, and why?

I would choose the word relentless. I never give up on the pitch and fight until the final minute, regardless of the situation or the result. I always try to give everything for the team. This relentlessness helps me overcome challenges and constantly pushes me to improve.

This winter move brings new expectations and a new environment. What convinced you that Red Star was the right next step for your career?

I was convinced by the club’s clear vision and its approach, which is strongly focused on player development and achieving the highest goals. Red Star has high standards, a strong winning mentality, and an environment where you are pushed to learn and improve every day. The trust the club showed in me was also very important. I believe this move will allow me to take on more responsibility and face the challenges I need at this stage of my career.

You are now working under head coach Bojan Maćešić and his coaching staff. How would you assess their methodology and daily work so far?

So far, I can say that working with the head coach and the entire coaching staff has been at a very high level. The quality of training, intensity, and attention to detail are higher than what I was used to before, which I really appreciate. Their approach is based on hard work, discipline, and clear expectations, but also on trust in the player and her development. This kind of environment motivates me greatly and helps me take the next step.

From a football perspective, what differences do you notice between Slovenia and Serbia?

The biggest difference I notice is the intensity of the game. In Serbia, football is more aggressive, faster, and physically more demanding, with a very high tempo in both matches and training sessions. The game is more direct, pressure is constant, and players are expected to make quick decisions. In Slovenia, the game can be slightly more controlled and tactically structured. For me, this Serbian environment is very positive because it pushes me to adapt faster, think quicker, and develop continuously.

How important are structure, discipline, and tactical clarity for a young player adapting to a new club and league?

Structure, discipline, and tactical clarity are extremely important, especially for young players. Knowing what is expected of you, how the team functions, and your role on the pitch allows you to adapt quickly and contribute effectively. Clear tactical guidance and discipline in training help build confidence, improve decision-making, and strengthen trust between players and coaches.

Red Star regularly competes for titles and European qualification. What goals have you set for yourself?

In the short term, my goal is to integrate into the team as smoothly as possible and make the most of every opportunity I get. I want my teammates and coaches to rely on me and feel my contribution. In the long term, I want to help the team achieve its goals, win trophies, and compete at the highest level domestically and in Europe. I want to grow together with the team and be part of its success.

Do you see this move as a step toward becoming a more complete player?

Absolutely. I see this move as an important step in my development. I want to influence games not only with goals, but also with consistency, work ethic, and dedication to the team. I have a great opportunity to learn from talented and experienced teammates, which helps me grow faster. I believe this experience will make me a stronger and more confident player.

Women’s football in the Balkans is clearly growing. How important are clubs like Red Star in that process?

Clubs like Red Star play a very important role in raising the standards and visibility of women’s football in the region. A club with strong organization, tradition, and ambition can set an example for others and help attract more attention, better conditions, and greater respect for the women’s game.

You are already a role model for many young girls in Slovenia. How do you view that responsibility?

I take this responsibility seriously. I want to show that with effort, dedication, and love for football, it is possible to achieve your dreams. I try to set a good example on and off the pitch by working hard, respecting teammates, and staying committed. If I can inspire even a few young girls to believe in themselves and not give up, that means a lot to me.

Finally, what message would you like to send to Red Star fans?

I am very proud to wear the red-and-white jersey and truly excited to play for this club. I want the fans to know that I will always give my maximum on the pitch – for the team, the supporters, and the club. I hope we will achieve great things together and create many positive moments. I can’t wait to feel the atmosphere at the matches and share that energy with the fans.
